2nd Amsterdam Turkish Film Festival

Dear Film Lovers,

ATFF is proud to bring you the second edition of the festival in October 2011. The fact that Turkish films have been winning numerous international awards, signals the revival but also a triumphant new golden era for Turkish cinema . The number of film productions per year is increasing at a constant pace. This year, the industry expects to give birth to more than 100 films, a number that announces the reawakening of a prolific industry. An industry that once upon a time had nothing to envy from Hollywood or Bollywood.

With your support in 2010 we were able to succeed in bringing great examples of Turkish cinema to your view and we will continue this practice with qualitative and original cinema. Originality has never been an issue within Turkish cinema. The culturally diverse and fascinating geography of Turkey is also a vast, unexplored chest of stories. This is why we at ATFF are eager to stick the label of “Avantgart Alaturka” to a part of ATFF’ s film programming. This year, ATFF will be exploring the Turkish avant-garde scene with a selection of titles by filmmakers who dared to cross the boundaries. The praxis of these “Rebels of Turkish Cinema” are to be discussed in one of the two panel discussions with the participation of local and international filmmakers. The exciting panel programming also includes the theme “Representation of Women in the Cinema of a Patriarchal Society: The Turkey Example” wherein we take a look at the female body in the cinemas of East and West.

With our guests from both artistic and academic worlds, taking part in panel’s and artist Q&A’s, De Balie as the site for ATFF 2011, turns into the cultural hub of Amsterdam during the festival weekend.

ATFF is a festival that produces more than a great film programming and panel series, also aims to present and represent the best examples of contemporary art. During the ATFF Gala event you will be enjoying some of the examples of this special programming including performances by upcoming artists.
All in all, this year’s program will surely broaden your perspective of the Turkish film scene and it’s valuable role in the global history of cinema. We are delighted to share this unique experience with you in the 2nd Amsterdam Turkish Film Festival.
